두뇌에 이식한 칩으로 작성한 인류 최초의 트윗이 게시됐다

두뇌에 이식한 칩을 활용하여 생각만으로 쓴 최초의 트윗이 게시됐다. 신경과학자이자 싱크론의 CEO인 토머스 옥슬리는 지난 23일, 트위터에 2020년 4월 싱크론 BCI(뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스)를 이식한 필립 오키프가 현지 시각 오후 7시부터 30분간 자신의 트위터 계정을 사용하며, BCI를 사용하여 두뇌에서 직접 사람들의 질문에 답변을 트윗할 것이라고 설명했다.

이후 토머스 옥슬리의 트위터 계정에는 “안녕, 세계! 짧은 트윗. 기념비적인 발전”이라는 트윗이 올라왔다. 이후 필립 오키프는 두뇌에 이식된 BCI를 활용하여 “키보드나 음성은 필요 없다. 그냥 생각하는 것만으로 트윗을 작성했다” 등 총 7개의 글을 작성했다.

싱크론은 최근 BCI 기술이 적용된 뉴로 칩 ‘스텐트로드’를 FDA에 제출, 임상 시험을 승인받았다. 이는 일론 머스크의 뇌 연구 스타트업, 뉴럴링크보다 빠른 속도이다. 필립 오키프가 BCI를 활용해 작성한 트윗 일부는 아래에서 볼 수 있다.
