UFC 역사상 최고의 선수 중 하나로 손꼽히는 코너 맥그리거. 그가 오는 2022년 종합격투기 복귀전에 나서겠다고 밝혀 눈길을 모으고 있다. 코너 맥그리거는 지난 7월 11일(한국 시간), ‘UFC 264’에서 더스틴 포이리에와의 3차전 경기를 가졌다. 하지만 코너는 경기 1 라운드 도중 왼쪽 발목에 심각한 골절상을 입었고, 이어진 포이리에의 파운딩을 이겨내지 못해 경기는 종료됐다.

발목 부상이 심각했던 만큼, 해당 경기 이후 많은 팬들은 코너가 종합격투기에 복귀할 수 있을지에 대해 의문을 품었다. 하지만 코너는 최근 트위터에서 해시태그 ‘#asknotorious’와 함께 팬들과의 질의응답 시간을 가졌다. 코너는 “언제 다시 싸우는 모습을 볼 수 있을까?”라는 한 팬의 질문에 자신은 빠르게 회복하고 있고 2022년에 복귀전을 치를 것이라고 답했다. 또한 그는 아마도 170 파운드급 경기에 나설 것이라고 전했다.

현재 체중 상한선 170파운드의 UFC 웰터급 챔피언은 나이지리아 출신의 카마루 우스만이다. 우스만은 14연승을 기록할 만큼 압도적인 경기력을 선보이고 있는데, 그는 코너의 복귀 소식을 듣고 “포이리에, 하입, 디아즈 중에 하나를 불러서 너를 다시 끝내기 전에 조용하는 게 좋을 거야”라고 언급했다.
