유색인종 직원이 1명도 없다? 버질 아블로의 오프 화이트, 다양성 부족으로 비판받다

버질 아블로가 여러 차례의 표절 시비에 휘말린 데 이어, 이번에는 그의 브랜드가 다양성이 부족하다는 지적을 받았다. 사건의 발단은 지난 4월 30일에 진행된 오프 화이트 이탈리아 지사의 직원 친목 행사. 논란은 이날 행사에 참석한 버질 아블로가 여러 장의 인스타그램 스토리를 올리면서 비롯됐다. 공개된 사진을 통해 오프 화이트의 직원 중 유색인종이 단 1명도 없다는 점이 지적받은 것이다.
유색인종인 많은 사람들이 이를 통해 느낀 좌절감을 트위터에 공유했다. 한 사용자는 “전혀 놀랍지 않다. 버질의 유일한 흑인 친구는 칸예와 루카뿐이니까”라고 비꼬는 반면, 또 다른 사용자는 “파티에 참석한 136명의 멤버 중 단 한 명의 유색 인종이 없다는 것은 그의 가치관에 문제가 있는 것이 확실하다”라며 브랜드 불매 운동을 주장했다.
오프 화이트의 홍보 담당자는 “136명의 디자인 팀 중 일부만 찍힌 것이고, 이는 우연에 가깝다”라며 문제에 대해 답변하는 것을 거부했다.
