칸예 웨스트가 파리 패션위크에서 이지 시즌 9 컬렉션을 공개한 가운데, 컬렉션에 포함됐던 ‘화이트 라이브스 매터’(이하 WLM) 티셔츠가 논란이 되고 있다. 칸예 웨스트가 미국 공화당 논평가 캔디스 오웬스와 함께 ‘WLM’ 티셔츠를 입은 사진이 퍼진 이후 미국의 명예훼손방지연맹은 티셔츠가 “증오 슬로건이다”라고 언급했다. 이에 칸예 웨스트는 인스타그램을 통해 “‘블랙 라이브스 매터’는 사기다. 다 끝났다. 수고하시길”이라는 내용을 게시했다.

그중 가장 많은 주목을 받은 것은 <보그>의 콘트리뷰팅 에디터 가브리엘라 카레파존슨의 글이었다. 그는 인스타그램에 칸예 웨스트의 ‘WLM’ 티셔츠를 강하게 비판했는데, 이에 칸예 웨스트가 반응한 것이다. 가브리엘라 카레파존슨은 인스타그램을 통해 “칸예 웨스트가 구상하고, 생산하고, 세계와 공유하는 티셔츠는 순수한 폭력”이라며 “변명의 여지가 없고, 예술조차 없다”라고 비판했다. 이에 칸예 웨스트는 인스타그램에 가브리엘라 카레파존슨의 사진을 자신의 인스타그램에 게시하며 “이 사람은 패션과 관련된 사람이 아니다”라는 내용의 글을 올렸다.
